(500) Days of Summer: Delightfully Charming
April 7th 2010 08:33
(500) Days of Summer is yet another great film from what is quickly becoming my favorite film variety, the “guy deals with break-up of his dream-girl” movie. It had been handled brilliantly in High Fidelity as well as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and this too does not disappoint. It is more of a coming-of-age story than a stereotypical romantic-comedy, but this movie doesn’t subscribe to a specific genre.
The movie sets off at a brisk pace and never really slows down, bouncing around different stages of the relationship choosing to show us what most other movies need to tell. The directing style is fresh, and the acting by the leads is top-tier throughout. Deschanel has made a career out of being impeccably easy to fall in love with, but it’s Gordon-Levitt who really steps up and carries the entire movie.
What is so refreshing about (500) Days of Summer is how sincere the whole movie is, avoiding many of the pitfalls of typical romantic comedies and giving us characters that everyone can see themselves in. There are some who might call the whole thing predictable, but this is an unfair assessment considering the movie opens by telling you the ending. The movie doesn’t want to surprise, it just wants to be honest.
(500) Days of Summer is delightfully charming, and the type of movie that reminds you why people make movie about love to begin with. It’s as refreshing as Garden State, honest as High Fidelity, and has a charm all its own.
