Caddyshack: Bogey at Best
April 6th 2010 17:31
Watching a “classic” for the first time is always an awkward experience. It has been built up so much over the years, that you are expecting a canonical example of the finest a genre has to offer. The problem is that while they were highly influential a the time, some of them simply don't hold up. Caddyshack is one of those movies.
Don't get me wrong, any film that brings Rodney Dangerfield to a mainstream audience is a good thing, but Caddyshack has all of the flaws of a movie with no focus. With the exception of Chevy Chase, Rodney Dangerfield, and Bill Murray, all of the actors were immediately forgettable, which is a major problem considering none of them are main characters.
The plot is supposed to revolve around all of the kids that work at the golf course, but they barely do anything worth watching so the big names are the only ones to get remembered. The script feels like it was aiming to be a movie like Fast Times at Ridgemont High or Animal House, but everything about the kids just acts as filler.
There are several hit-or-miss moments, and it shouldn't be hard to see why this movie doesn't necessarily appeal to everyone. Murray's character has some of the best lines, but at times is also the most annoying. Chase and Dangerfield do what they do best, but the characters are still not strong enough to base a whole film around when there is nothing else funny happening. Caddyshack is worth a rent just to understand all of the pop culture references that followed, but the movie is far short of the status is it remembered for.
