Choke: Tough To Swallow

I went into Choke knowing what most people know about the movie: it's starring Sam Rockwell, and adapted from a novel by Chuck Palahniuk, the author of Fight Club. To be honest, I wasn't even sure what to expect. Now that I've seen it, I'm still not entirely sure what it was trying to accomplish.


The movie suffers from problems, it has to. Anjelica Huston and Sam Rockwell gave real life to their characters, and there are glimpses of greatness in the writing, but throughout the whole thing I couldn't quite shake the feeling that something was "off". You know when you see a movie that's based off of a novel, and you just KNOW that certain parts were probably much better explained/executed in the book, even though you never read it? Choke is that movie.

Choke shows us a world full of interesting characters and situations, but never focuses in on anything long enough to be entertained by them. The film doesn't engross, it just happens. The plot arcs are emotionless, and in the end you're left with no closure whatsoever.

Despite the fact that the film left me remarkably unfulfilled, Sam Rockwell has a way of making even the worst experiences borderline watchable. Choke isn't even a bad movie, it just leaves the impression that it should have been better. Somehow, someway, better.

yeah - I'm with you here - the whole film was very flat - most of the scenes never came to life and it felt like I was watching the raw takes all the time in their unedited form.

As it happens the book wasn't too crash hot either.
