District 9: I See What You Did There
July 29th 2010 16:13
It's always tough seeing a movie like this so much later than everyone else. The Internet has spoiled half of it, and over-hyped the rest, so going in with a "fresh" perspective is almost impossible. Is District 9 one of the better science fiction films to come out in the last few years? Certainly. Is it the best movie of the year? I don't think so.
As far as the positives are concerned, District 9 had tons of them. The effects were fantastic, acting was great for a bunch of unknowns, and the story was interesting, although certainly not as original as people give it credit for. This movie is a great indicator of what can be accomplished on a limited budget, and proof that you don't need to fork over a ton of cash to get quality special effects.
Surprisingly enough, one of my main problems with the movie is one of the things I liked most about it as it was happening. About half-way through, the film's plot takes a major shift, and although I thought it was awesome at the time, from there on out my interest began to dwindle. It was exciting and well executed, but certainly not the unique masterpiece people had hyped it up to be.
I realize that all of the hype hurt my enjoyment of the film, but even so I can appreciate that it is an accomplishment. District 9 is a great example of the science fiction genre, but certainly not as groundbreaking or subtle as people were making it out to be.
