Does the remake have the Soul of the original?

Does the remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still have the soul of the original 1951 sci-fi classic? According to Keanu and director Scott Derickson, the answer is absolutely and yes. After seeing the remake, I'd have to say "sort of." Certainly the film has some excellent points to make about us humans abusing our little blue orb. And the acting is first rate with Keanu delivering an excellent performance as the enigmatic Klaatu. But it seemed to me that certain obligatory scenes were tacked on and not as integral to the story as they were in the original. The scene where Klaatu solves Professor Barhhardt's physics problem on the blackboard was perfunctory at best and lacked any explanation as to what the equations mean. In the original they represented a problem in celestial mechanics that explained how Klatatu's ship got "from one planet to the next." That "movie moment" when a scientist finally realizes that he's talking to someone from another world was glossed over and lacked the impact it needed. It was a pivotal point in the narrative.
