Four Brothers: Wahlberg's Show
June 7th 2010 15:51
Four Brothers takes a bit to get going, but once Mark Wahlberg drops the gloves its a fun ride. The "conspiracy" element of the story doesn't pay off, but the rapport between the leading actors more than makes up for it. This isn't a complex crime drama, but a modern western about four brothers who take the law into their own hands.
Although no one gives a poor performance, Wahlberg was born for this type of role and certainly has the most fun with his character. The script does a great job of balancing intensity with humor, but the red herrings the brothers encounter during their investigation are annoying, especially because the mystery isn't that interesting to begin with.
John Singleton, who also directed the new Shaft film, knows how to make an entertaining crime movie. He knows he's not Scorsese, doesn't try to be, but one thing he does well is sell the audience on a badass.
As long as you don't expect a serious crime drama, Four Brothers doesn't disappoint. Parts of the script could have been tightened up a bit, but the fun characters carry the lackluster plot. Regardless, it's good popcorn fun.
