Gigantic: What's The Big Deal
July 20th 2010 16:09
Gigantic is the Vanilla Ice of indie cinema. The pieces are there in theory, but the movie tries way too hard to be cool, resulting in an inauthentic mess. I like quirky dialogue and weird characters, but nothing is given enough time to develop properly or make me care at all. The entire film feels incredibly condescending, like the writer watched several indie films that worked and haphazardly copied the interesting elements.
Way too many things are brought up that don't matter at all, and there are just enough "this will get them asking questions" moments to really piss me off. I get it, you're an indie film, but there is a difference between leaving things open to interpretation and half-answering nonsense that comes out of nowhere in a lame attempt at feeling creative.
The film approaches watch-ability because of the spectacular cast, but even Zooey Deschanel feels like she's phoning it in a bit. Paul Dano is a great actor but just didn't have what it takes this time around to carry a whole movie. John Goodman steals every scene he's in, but he's John Goodman what else would you expect?
If you like all of the actors in it, you might consider checking out Gigantic. As a warning though, if you don't fall in love with it right away, don't stick around waiting for it to get better. It doesn't. Also, don't stick around to get closure, you won't get any.
