Has Disney Died?

May 28th 2009 08:08
Many of us don't remember the days of Walt Disney, myself included. But we do remember the Disney Classics, the original Cinderella, which has since had two rather tasteless sequels, the original Tarzan (which has also had a sequel that has not lived up to the first film), Snow White, which has thankfully been left alone, Beauty and the Beast, and of course, Peter Pan.

Not to mention the original cartoons, Donald Duck, Mickey & Friends, and Winnie the Pooh. There is not a doubt in my mind that the original Disney films and cartoons, despite their older animation techniques, had a certain class about them. Perhaps this is because many of them were created by or involved the late Walt Disney himself, or perhaps simply because they were focused on the morals, of conveying meaning to children, rather than the mindless entertainment dished up by Disney today.

Being a fan of TV shows such as Hannah Montana and Wizards of Waverely Place, it may seem strange that I am slamming Disney. However, whilst I love their newer shows, they lack the substance and the magic of the Classics. I have often wondered whether it is simply because I've grown older that the films and TV shows have lost their magic, yet when I watch the Classic today, they still instill the same hope in me. Shows and films such as Hannah Montana and Camp Rock are a very different kind of Disney to the originals, and it is not to say that they lack quality, because and perhaps it is the world that has changed, and Disney has simply been forced to follow suit.

In my opinion, Disney is dying, slowly and painfully, or perhaps it is merely morphing into a company that reflects the world it's in, a commercial and soulless world.

I too am mourning the loss of innocence that Disney once possessed.

My daughter is a big fan of the oldies; even at the tender age of four she connects more deeply with them than any of the modern productions.

I think also, the animation back then had the touch of a human hand, in the rendering and the motion, and maybe the cold efficiency of modern computer animation can't quite convey the same emotional responses in us.

Or maybe I'm just getting old and nostalgic.

Old and nostalgic? I hardly think so, you're very right about the animation point as well, I didn't think of it before, but its true, perhaps because the amount of work, care, and passion that went into the Classics was so much more than what goes into Disney today.

having missed the Disney channel boom by about 5 years (haha, time moves fast nowadays) i can't really keep up with all these shows, so it seems a separate entity to me from the Disney movies of old. I agree that the focus has significantly shifted, and the lack of animated feature-length films being produced is a sign of the company's chosen direction (also indicated by the spawning of what you rightfully describe as uninspiring and unnecessary sequels.)

some recent films I enjoyed were the Emperor's New Groove and the Atlantis film, and while they are products of a modern time, they had the same feel- the straightforward storyline, etc-- and i'm actually secretly looking forward to the new princess/frog film.
