Jennifer's Body: Sexy, Bloody Sexy
July 16th 2010 19:35
I like Diablo Cody damnit. She can be a little pretentious with her "I'm so hip it hurts" dialogue, but most of it still makes me chuckle. Jennifer's Body doesn't have the same heart, but the second anyone opens their mouth, you're made very aware that you've stumbled into Cody Island.
Early on, I got annoyed that all of the marketing focused on Megan Fox so much, since Amanda Seyfried really stole the show. Fox does a good job too, but her only task is to look sexy, confident, and sit in a make-up chair for a couple hours. This isn't exactly a big stretch. Seyfried has played a wide variety of characters in her short career, and I hope she continues to take comedic roles because her timing is excellent.
The film isn't particularly scary, has some funny moments, and everything is obvious quite early on. What is interesting, are the ways that gender conventions in the horror genre are played with. Jennifer's Body embraces the "evil temptress" cliché, while making Seyfried much more than your average helpless scream queen.
Although it's nothing spectacular, the film never takes itself too seriously and makes for decent popcorn entertainment. At least movie wasn't outright insulting like Transformers 2 and lets face it, the girls are pretty cute.
