Had Keanu Reeves and Jennifer Connelly watched the original film before taking on this remake with so many high expectations? "I watched it several times to get a feel for it," said Connelly. The answers came quickly, “I absolutely watched it several times,” replied Keanu. Connelly elaborated a bit more, “I watched it many times. My character undergoes many changes. She’s a scientist and microbiologist. There’s a relationship between her and her stepson we explore in greater depth. So that’s a bit of a departure and hopefully we’ve retained the quality of Helen."
So why did so many sci-fi purists not feel at home with the remake? The technology didn't keep pace with the story. Like watching two films at once, they never meshed. The acting was first rate (at least Reeves and Connelly's). But the narrative and story fell flat with the new "green earth" message. This happens all too often in remakes, especially in sci-fi.
