MacGruber: Just Plain Fun

MacGruber delivered exactly what I was expecting. Certainly no masterpiece, but far from terrible, the film is a fun parody of the action genre. Some of the jokes may fall flat or go on too long, but the funny parts are truly side-splitting. MacGruber acts as a good reminder that not all parodies are terrible, and this film is more Hot Shots than Disaster Movie.
Although the supporting cast isn't bad, Will Forte and Val Kilmer really nail the tone their characters need and steal the show. I never thought of Val Kilmer as a hilarious guy, but after his last few outings he proves that he has serious comedic chops. Ryan Phillippe doesn't take anything away from the film, but you certainly get the idea that his role would've been more memorable in someone else's hands.
Although it seems a little late to be making a giant MacGyver parody, MacGruber really couldn't have come out at a better time. This movie probably wouldn't have gotten made if it weren't for the recent popularity of R-rated comedies, and this generation needs to see what proper parody films are like, before the genre fades away entirely.
If you enjoy the MacGruber skits, the premise doesn't stretch itself thin at a two-hour movie. It isn't the funniest movie ever made or anything, but it certainly makes for a fun night at the movies. There is only so much you can expect from a parody film, and at this point I'm just pleased if it's better than Superhero Movie and it's terrible brethren.
