Mercury Rising: Too Close To The Sun
June 5th 2010 15:32
At a glance, its not obvious where Mercury Rising went wrong. The cast is strong, the concept solid, and although it was never going to be a masterpiece, it had the potential to be an exciting thriller. Unfortunately, the entire film collapses in on itself like a house of cards, only made out of cliches and predictability.
In order for thrillers such as this to work, they need to be exciting the whole way though. Willis spends an unfortunate amount of time babysitting, and the film's pacing suffers incredibly for it. By the time anything of interest happens, the plays have been set up in such a predictable fashion that the entire film can be predicted beat for beat.
Despite these issues, the cast is incredibly solid. While none of the actors deviate too far from their typical roles, they're the roles they play well. Willis and Baldwin do the best they can with what they're given, but there are only so many ways you can dress up a pig before you notice it still has a curly tail.
Even if you've never heard of it, Mercury Rising is a film that everyone has seen multiple times. All of the cliches could be forgiven if there was enough action to make up for it, but even there the film fails to deliver.
