Miss March: Missed the Mark
March 25th 2010 03:17
To anyone unfamiliar with The Whitest Kids U' Know, Miss March probably just feels like a lame knock-off of other teen road comedies. That's not exactly inaccurate, but WKUK have a style based off of exploiting clichés and pushing absurdity. Their bit works really well in a sketch comedy format, but there are times when you really feel that they're pushing to fill a whole film, which says a lot since the movie is only ninety minutes.
We're introduced to the “straight man – wacky sidekick” dynamic pretty early, and it becomes obvious just as quickly that the entire thing would be much funnier if they didn't have to slow down once in a while and advance what little plot there is. Some of the jokes work amazingly well, some fall totally flat, and everything between the bits is outright painful at times.
The viewing experience itself is pretty hard to explain. It was almost as if I was stuck somewhere I didn't want to be for an hour and a half, but every once in a while something just clicks and I would crack up laughing. There were a couple of the jokes I absolutely loved, but I was always just one disk skip away from giving up on the film entirely.
The Whitest Kids U' Know are very good at the type of humor they do, but Miss March clearly shows that their style just doesn't translate too well into a movie. Sure, you'll find yourself chuckling a bit, but if you dig their humor your time is much better invested in watching some of their sketches instead.
