Missionary Man: An Unflattering Position
April 14th 2010 23:28
Missionary Man is an movie directed, written by, and starring action juggernaut Dolph Lundgren. The movie has the look and feel of a direct-to-video action flick, but is limited by the shallow plot that accompanies such fare.
The story revolves around a mysterious but religious drifter who comes into town for a funeral. The town is built around a reservation, our hero quickly discovers that a corrupt businessman is using murder and intimidation to sway the tribal council to approve a large casino development in the area. In traditional Steven Segal fashion, the drifter gets involved in swift but bloody justice.
Lundgren's acting and writing aren't as bad as one would expect, but the direction entirely falls apart when it comes to the plot. The film attempts a balancing act between explaining things poorly, and not at all. This is pretty typical for direct-to-video action films, and even though this one managed to get a limited theatrical release, it still falls victim to the traps of its genre.
While far from the worst action film ever made, Missionary Man is definitely not the best either. The action scenes and protagonist are fun in that shlockey cool way, but the spiritual elements and regurgitated plot drag the whole thing down past redemption.
