Numb: A Refreshing Feeling

I had never heard of the movie Numb before, but the description seemed interesting so I gave it a shot. Matthew Perry plays a depressed writer that is suffering from depersonalization disorder, and the film documents his struggles with work, family, and women. It definitely isn’t a typical romantic comedy, but the script has a certain subtle honesty that is refreshing.
The movie is more or less a character study, and Perry really holds his own in a more serious leading role. He still has his trademark sarcasm, but behind it you really get a sense of the hell that his character is going through. The entire movie hinges on his excellent performance, but at times following this type of character for so long can get a little weary and drawn out.
The main romantic interest, played by Lynn Collins, provides some much needed relief from Perry’s morose protagonist. Their chemistry seems genuine, and Collins manages to make her character incredibly easy to fall in love with.
The comedy in the film works because it’s from the heart. It’s not a laugh out loud type of humor, but an overall amusing ride with some well written characters. There are some clichéd moments and parts where the pacing drags on, but these are minor hiccups.
Numb is an incredibly charming story about the trials and tribulations of living with a personality disorder, but only works because the script feels genuine and the leads nail their performances.
