Super High Me: Surprisingly Boring
March 11th 2010 15:25
For those of you who don't know, Doug Benson is a fairly reputable stoner comic. When Super Size Me came out, he included a joke in his act saying that he was going to make a documentary and smoke marijuana everyday for a month and see what happened. Eventually, a filmmaker approached him and encouraged Doug to do the experiment for real.
The movie has certain highlights, and a great number of cameos from other comedians, but the focus is fuzzy at best. The actual experiment takes place in two parts, one month where Doug will stop getting high and take a series of tests, the next month Doug will get high constantly and then take the same tests to see the effects.
The movie has an interesting enough premise, but the experiment is only treated as secondary to Doug as he goes through this adventure. Included are segments that explain the laws around medical marijuana dispensaries, which help to inform but also act to distract from the main arc of the film.
The results are barely discussed, only shown, and the most entertaining parts of the entire film are snippets shown from Doug's act and the month where he struggles with boredom because he can't get high.
Super High Me takes a good concept, but meets it with terrible execution and acts like it is less about the effects of marijuana itself, and only about Doug as he goes through these two months. To those of you who enjoy Benson's style of comedy, the movie is partially saved, but there are times that even he knows are boring.
If you like Doug Benson, it's not a terrible way to spend a couple hours, but you're left with an unfinished feeling because nothing really happens. All you end up with is a documentary that partially educates, partially entertains, and ruins what could have been a much better executed premise.
