Superman II: Not Worth Kneeling For

Superman II should have been a better movie. I'm not familiar with the Richard Donner cut, so I don't feel right assuming it succeeded where this one failed, but it certainly isn't a hard idea to believe. This concept was too good for such a bland result, as Superman has a real fight on his hands for once. Not only is General Zod every bit as powerful as the Man of Steel, but so are his lackeys. The whole movie should have built to a fantastic showdown, but instead took far too long to get where it was going. When it got there, it still didn't deliver.
At least if the movie was an action extravaganza, the terrible plot development could have been forgiven. I'm not asking for the film to be totally devoid of emotion, but far too much time was spent on a love story that went nowhere. Anything that happened in the first hour gets taken back far too quickly, and we're left with half hazard conclusions for what should be rather impactful events.
All of the magic and grandeur that was handled so well in the first one has also vanished, leaving behind an empty shell of Superman vaguely doing Supermany things. Even these heroic moments are disappointing, as the climax is anything but exciting and extremely rushed.
It's a shame that such a good story opportunity was handled in such a poor manner. General Zod should be one of Superman's most interesting opponents, but the result has all the depth of a blatant cash-in sequel. The audience is left unsatisfied, forced to spend too much time lingering on pointless moments only to get robbed of a decent pay-off in the end.
