Superman IV: Quest for Sucking
May 2nd 2010 15:10
Superman IV is a terrible movie. There are plot holes, terrible revealing mistakes, and a nonsensical story. No longer drowning in slapstick nonsense like Superman III, this film happens to be terrible for every other reason. I remember seeing this when I was five and thinking it was terrible, which says a lot considering Weekend at Bernie's was one of my favorite movies at the time.
Lex Luthor is back, and this time instead of a bumbling oaf for a sidekick, we get his teenage nephew who talks like a surfer. The audience is also forced to suffer through a heavy-handed message about nuclear disarmament, some terrible Three's Company-esque moments, and Nuclear Man, a villain created by Luthor using a combination of Superman's DNA and terrible studio ideas. For god's sakes, you can't make a big baddy who scratches people with his nails and is utterly useless when out of direct sunlight.
Honestly, this movie feels like no one was even trying. The effects are the worst in the series, and wires are constantly visible. All of the grandeur and presence of the first film is long gone, and with it all of the charm and entertainment too.
This movie has almost no redeeming qualities, and isn't even worth watching to laugh at. If you're that curious to see how bad it is, there's a couple videos online that highlight some of the worst parts of the flick. Certainly don't waste your time with the whole thing though.
