Superman: Yeah, He's A Pretty Swell Guy

It's been quite some time since I sat down and watched the 1978 Superman movie start-to-finish, and I will admit I expected much of it to age terribly. I was surprised to find out that most of it holds up quite well, even the special effects. Sure, it's not as crisp as the CGI we see today, but a lot of the charm and wonder behind special effects have evaporated with the difficulty.
Reeve is even better than I remembered, really making Superman come alive like no one else could. Brandon Routh didn't exactly fail, but his Clark Kent doesn't hold a candle to Reeve's. The majority of the cast fit into the roles nicely, although did I have a lot of problems with the way Lex Luthor was portrayed.
It could be because I'm more familiar with the source characters than ever before, but Hackman's Luthor felt more like Dr. Claw then one of Superman's most notorious foes. I realize his bumbling assistant was there for comedic value, but Luthor is supposed to be a criminal mastermind. He should at least find competent cronies or a less ridiculous wig.
Nit-picking aside, I was quite impressed with how well the movie held up. The pacing was great, music amazing, and the first time we get to see Superman at work is still every bit as exciting as it was thirty years ago. Sure some parts are lame or boring, but compared to the superhero movies of today it still has something most of them are missing: a ton of heart.
