The Godfather Part III: Tragically Unnecessary
April 4th 2010 22:15
The first time that I saw The Godfather Part III, it was at the end of a marathon of the entire saga. I decided to give the movie another chance recently, and see how the entire experience sat with me in a fresher state. This was ultimately a poor decision, as all this most recent viewing did was confirm my suspicions about the film's shocking lack in quality.
There are those who choose to defend the movie, saying that it is only poor in comparison to the other films, but this is an empty excuse. It is not only bad compared to other Godfather films, but also bad compared to almost every gangster film ever made. The entire movies only a handful of redeeming moments, and feels like it is trying far to hard to remind us that it is indeed a Godfather film.
Most of the criticism attacks Sofia Coppola, whose performance feels unemotional and incredibly wooden, but the movie has many additional problems. The dialogue doesn't have the same punch, the plot itself is far less interesting, and far too much time is spent focusing on the wrong characters. When one of the major conflicts of the film revolves around a romance with no chemistry that just happens to feature first cousins, it's hard for the audience to get invested at all.
If you really feel the need to get some closure on the characters from the other films, The Godfather Part III tries its best, but still barely delivers. The movie feels like the lazy, cash-in sequels Hollywood is known for, and is barely a shadow of its predecessors.
