TOO MANY MESSAGES PLAGUE REMAKE
December 15th 2008 17:38
If you remember the original, the story was much leaner and crisper. In this remake, we have to deal with a kid and all his emotional baggage. Seems the B story here is just as important as the A story. Must have been written by a TV writer. They love multiple story lines, which in my opinion never work. They just muddy the waters and dilute the impact of the entire story.
Another big problem I had was the way they handled Gort. First off, they had the military name him. Terrible idea. Next, they boarded him up in some metal garage doors. Metal panels? Come on. When have we not seen that before? How low tech can you get? Why not just shove some rocks up against him? In the original, they were far more high tech, encasing Gort in an experimental new plastic. --pretty radical for the early 50's. Heck, even in the 60's, plastic was new (remember the classic line uttered to Ben in The Graduate?)
More criticism to come....
