Toy Story 3: Playing With My Heart
July 8th 2010 15:52
Contrary to mainstream opinion, I really didn't like Toy Story 2. When I found out that it was 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, I thought maybe I had seen the wrong movie or something. If you're curious about my particular gripes, feel free to check out my review, but in short it felt like a cash-in sequel that lacked the spirit of the first film. On the other hand, Toy Story 3 nailed what a sequel should be.
The characters are just as fun as they ever were, the story is fresh and fun, and following the trend in Pixar movies as of late, things get pretty intense. I didn't cry or anything, but lets just say that I was genuinely concerned that the characters were in serious danger. Considering this is a Disney film, that's damn impressive.
The animation was beautiful as always, and the various ways that the toys used household items were just as inventive as the first time around. The Toy Story films are magical because they remind you just how simple childhood was, and make you feel like a dick because you had to grow up. I loved it, but it totally nostalgia-fried me.
Fans of the franchise won't be disappointed. Those few who disliked the last film (like me), won't be disappointed. It's Toy Story for crying out loud! The only way to hate it is to be dead inside.
