Under Siege: Nothing to Brag About, But Segal's Finest
May 11th 2010 16:20
I've decided to switch up the format for these reviews a little bit, condensing my input to a paragraph and a score, and composing the rest out of hilarious quotes from other reviewers. I'm not married to any specific format, just looking to mix things up a little, so please feel free to comment with any suggestions.
Long story short, Under Siege doesn't take itself seriously enough to be good, but isn't terrible enough to be consistently laughable. Tommy Lee Jones does play a great villain, but it's not enough to save a mediocre script, mixed performances, and some terribly distracting editing choices.

In 'Under Siege,' a scrappy, disrespectful, but ingenious working-class guy finds himself isolated in a room while terrorists outside blast everything in sight... In the original Die Hard, Bruce Willis cut himself up trying to walk barefoot across a floor littered with broken glass. Steven Seagal would just eat the glass.
- Rob GonsalvesSeagal kicks, punches, knifes, throttles, shoots, blows up, and band saws to death most every heavy in sight and Jones and Busey play their parts so over-the-top they could reach the moon. "Under Siege" doesn't make a lot of sense, but it's got excitement galore.
- John J. PuccioSome have called this film a cross between The Hunt for Red October and Die Hard, but similarities are purely superficial. Certainly, the intelligent writing and detailed characters of those films are missing... Seagal sleepwalks through the role, displaying absolutely no versatility or emotion. He has all the screen presence of a zombie, and one wonders how this man got to be so popular so fast.
