Why The Global Obsession With Facebook?

Facebook. It is a social networking tool, and is used by millions around the world. And why the obsession with it? It's extremely convenient, better than MySpace, and much much better than any other form of IM. But be warned, Facebook is not for the technologically challenged, as it takes considerable effort to maintain, what with uploading and then tagging photos, commenting, 'liking', messaging, and the Facebook IM. Also, there is no privacy on Facebook. Anyone who you have accepted as a friend can see your photos, read your conversations with other people, and now even comment them.
And the constant requirement to update your status! It seems that nowadays, if you're status isn't on a minute-by-minute basis, it's a crisis situation! Personally, I think that Facebook is overrated, and it's far easier to simply call someone, or sent them an SMS. Then again, Facebook IS free, and available for everyone, and can be easily accessed, even from your phone. Another beauty of Facebook is that you can find old friends, colleagues, or schoolmates, and connect with people from all over the world. It's a great way of staying in touch with old friends, and it's much easier to ignore a Facebook comment from someone you don't like than it is to ignore a phone call or actually speaking to them in person.
The idea that using Facebook is anti-social, well, this is true in several aspects, as it doesn't exactly promote contact on any kind of meaningful level, but it does enable people to converse with friends overseas, or simply catch up. Also, it's a great way to let people know about an event or to arrange to meet up with someone.
Personally, I find Facebook to be an extremely convenient nuisance.
