World's Greatest Dad: As Dark As It Is Real
April 23rd 2010 12:40
There are lots of things I absolutely loved about World's Greatest Dad. It was original, it was funny, and damn did it have guts. Bobcat Goldthwait knows how to lead an audience through a dark comedy, and I can't imagine an actor who could fit the bill like Robin Williams.
Unfortunately, as I find with many dark comedies, things lose steam a bit after the half-way mark. There are still laughs throughout, and it isn't the shift in tone that bothered me as much as the premise playing itself out a little too early.
If you're unfamiliar with Bobcat Goldthwait, you may not know what to expect. Let's just say when he plays dark, he really means it. The strength of this film is not in the comedy, but in its ability to make even the craziest characters frightfully real, honest, but still funny as hell.
If you're a fan of Robin Williams' darker work, or dark comedies in general, World's Greatest Dad is a must-see. Robin Williams is at the top of his game, and manages the difficult task of keeping his character not only relatable, but likable too. Despite some minor pacing problems towards the end, it's extremely rare for a movie to be this dark but still hilarious.
